Vinyl Lounge Turns Five- Legendary producer Mark Opitz joins to celebrate! – Friday 5th October
The Vinyl Lounge, Canberra’s monthly gathering of analogue music lovers, will celebrate its fifth birthday with door prizes, cupcakes and other surprises. Legendary award-winning producer Mark Opitz will be the guest of honour at the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia’s (NFSA) Vinyl Lounge anniversary edition.
At Vinyl Lounge, Opitz will talk about his career and some of his (many) musical highlights, as well as answer questions from the public. Vinyl lovers are encouraged to bring along their favourite records, especially if they were produced by Mark Opitz. The fun kicks off at 5:30pm in the NFSA Theatrette and entry is free. Heath Franklin’s Chopper- ‘Bogan Jesus’ – Friday 5th October
Aussie comedy legend, Heath Franklin’s Chopper is coming to Canberra for his sell out show, Bogan Jesus. It’s toured the comedy festivals across OZ, and NZ this year, and he is finally bringing the laughs to Playhouse Theatre, Canberra. Gather round for a hilarious night and be healed by Bogan Jesus! Tab.com.au TC Memorial Cup & Students Race Day at Thoroughbred Park – Friday 5th October
All students are gathering around for the Students’ Race day at Thoroughbred Park for an exciting day of racing and fashion. The event will include the Tony Campbell Memorial Cup and the Sky Callers Cup along with 6 other races. There will be also be free transport running all day and fashions on the field with prizes up for grabs, so dress to impress! Students Race Day will kick off from 11am to 6pm and best of all, entry is free. This event is for over 18’s only.
NSW Rural Fire Service Community Open Day – Saturday 6th October
The big red fire trucks will be rolling into Googong to make a splash for bushfire season at the annual NSW Rural Fire Service Community Open Day. If you’ve always dreamed of climbing the fire ladder, trying out the giant hose or checking your handle on the emergency radio, then here’s your chance – under the watchful eye of volunteers from the local Jerrabomberra Creek brigade. The community party will have a serious side too. It’s a great chance to pick up some tips from the experts and make sure your property and loved ones are safe and ready for bushfire season. Everyone is invited to Beltana Park, on Saturday 6 October 2017, from 10am to 2pm. There will be live music, a jumping castle, sausage sizzle and truck loads of free family fun. Canberra Burns Club Community Event- Saturday 6th October
The Canberra Burns Club Highland Gathering is a free community event. Join them on Kett Street Oval in Kambah from 10am to 5pm for a day of traditional Scottish activities including the Act Pipe Band competition with bands from around Australia competing.
Enjoy the massed bands at the beginning and end of the day. See the Tartan Warriors with their Scottish heavy athletics, Highland Dancing competition, Canberra Scottie dogs, Pipe Band displays, the Canberra Capital Spirit Drill teams and more. Clan tents, market stalls, some Scottish themed food vans with food including Haggis. For the children, face painting, jumping castle and more!
Government House Open Day on – Saturday 6th October
This free event from 10am-2pm allows visitors to explore Australia’s Vice-Regal residence, experience the beauty of Government House, and better understand the role of the Governor-General. During the Open Day, the Governor-General, His Excellency General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC (Retd), Lady Cosgrove and Government House staff will be on hand to share perspectives of living and working at one of Australia’s most iconic residences. In addition, visitors can view the grounds at leisure, see the public rooms in the House where the Governor-General meets with world leaders, and discover art, objects and furniture provided by partners including the National Gallery of Australia and the Australiana Fund. While the Open Day will have a number of food and beverage providers on site – including the SES – visitors are welcome to bring their own picnic lunch and relax within the grounds.
