Olive at Mawson has a wonderfully warm feeling that is unusual among Canberra’s many restaurants. The reason becomes clear when you realise that the Yianoulakis family, with a strong pedigree in Canberra dining, has decided to expand their operations. On top of their most recent (twelve-year!) stint in the Hellenic Trattoria, the determined family, led by Aleca & John have set a path for their three sons. As a result, the oldest son, Dimitri, has thrown the doors open on a plush (though welcoming) restaurant.

Approaching the restaurant, the old Con’s Seafood Restaurant is now almost unrecognisable. White blinds hang in the floor-to-ceiling windows to provide a sense of intrigue and allowing glimpses of the activities within. Meanwhile, the wire pendant lights sparkle and shine through the middle of the dining room.

Chef Steve Muscat believes strongly in classical Mediterranean cooking. Having worked with the Yianoulakis family previously at the Hellenic Trattoria, the “Simply, it’s food I like to eat,” he explains. “There are elements of Greek, Italian, and Mediterranean. I’ll take elements of each classic cuisine and use them to add a modern twist to a lot of dishes people know and love.

Consistent with this homely feel is the philosophy of ensuring as much of the food is prepared in-house as possible. While this may seem obvious, it is very unusual for a single restaurant to make its own bread and ice-cream. Oh, and the truffles? Clearly Steve has made these before!
Open Wednesday to Friday for lunch and Tuesday to Saturday for dinner, olive is a very welcome addition to Southside dining. Be sure to get in soon and make yourself feel at home. Before you know it you’ll be one of the family.
