For over 50 years, only one venue has been at the heart of Australian politics: The National Press Club. Situated only a stone’s throw from Parliament House, the club has been the scene of some of the most important speeches in Australian history, and played host to some of the most influential speakers the world has to offer.

Alongside this rich history of policy and politics, the National Press Club is also a social centre within Canberra’s inner-south. Members (with various categories, membership is open to everyone) fill the luxurious lounge, bar and balcony reflecting on matters both personal and public at the end of a long day.

Fittingly, The National Press Club adds a sense of sophistication to the events it holds for its members. While the weekly ‘address’ is a large event for the club, there are plenty more special events that occur on a weekly basis.

For example, head to the club on a Thursday and you might find yourself swept up in the fun and energy of the Blues Party, featuring Canberra’s best acts. On Fridays, ease yourself into the weekend with some soulful jazz. Kicking off at 6.00pm, it’s a great way to forget the woes of the week just gone.

Located within the establishment is Chatham House, which shows off the expertise of The National Press Club’s kitchen team. Led by Executive Chef Daren Tetley, the venue has recently won the 2016 Savour Australia Restaurant and Catering Hostplus Award for Excellence and 2016 Clubs ACT Best Dining Experience. With regular degustations that focus on seasonal ingredients, this is a dining experience that truly reflects the sophistication of the venue.
