Deakin is one of the Inner South’s most relaxed suburbs. With a mix of leafy streets and a shopping precinct to match Manuka and Kingston in size, perhaps this is what makes the areas perfect for a sprawling and friendly little café such as Double Shot.

Having undergone a change of ownership in late 2013, the café’s interior has been updated with a more natural feel that reflects the eucalypts that line Hopetoun Circuit. Stacked logs provided a warm backdrop in the main room while lengths of sisel rope hang overhead. In the popular outdoor area, the same material surrounds the large planter boxes, unifying the space with the interior. The natural feel follows through to the coffee cups and saucers with a lovely celadon green glaze, and one gets the feeling that this is the theme for much of the menu as well, with a strong focus on quality produce that few others venues can match. For breakfast, indulge with a Brioche French Toast, feel less guilty with a fruit plate or go ‘paleo’ with eggs, bacon, mushrooms and avocado. A range of toasties is available all day. Meanwhile, for lunch, the classic Fish & Chips with Whiting and lime aoli hits the mark. Why not grab a salad? Diners in need of extra kick can add their own protein from a selection including chicken, lamb, beef and salmon.

Steak sandwich, burgers and pastas all feature heavily across the lunch menu, providing plenty of options for a snack or feast. Perfect for cyclists and early exercisers, Double Shot is open from 7.00am weekdays (7.30am on Saturday and Sunday). The café is also licensed, with a focussed range of white and red wines from the local region and as far away as Italy and Spain. A collection of delicious cakes and pastries mean that any time is a good time to visit. With friendly staff and a vibrant atmosphere, Double Shot has everything to cater for a take-away caffeine hit through to a wonderful afternoon with friends.
