Canberra will be at its brightest this autumn. Enlighten Festival has been growing every year, lighting up some of our most iconic buildings with fantastical projections and creative installations, but that’s not all. This year, for 10 days, the Capital will also be host to music, food and exciting events.
First let’s talk about the food. There are a couple of eating options, including the Night Noodle Markets. You’ll find your Pad Thai and dumplings, my personal favourite and other delicious food amongst themed bars and music. Maybe you’d like to eat at Parliament House or at the National Portrait Gallery where Masterchef contestant Nick Whitehouse will be cooking up a three-course meal? Of course these are ticketed events, so be sure to get yours quickly!
Now for the music. From opera and choral music to USA-based Lake Street Dive’s smooth yet funky mix of indie soul and jazz, this years festival has you covered. Treat your ears to the sounds of Katie Noonan against the back drop of Lake Burley Griffin or listen to the fun pop-fuelled group of six friends, Alpine, rocking out in The Electric Garden. Whatever your musical taste you’ll find something good at Enlighten.
This is a good time to see what’s going on inside the buildings. If you haven’t had an opportunity to visit the exhibitions you’re in luck because they are all open for the festival. Learn about the Magna Carta, or tour Parliament House, check out some contemporary art, or the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander works at the National Gallery of Australia… or play laser tag at Questacon!
But make sure you don’t miss the outside events. Roving between the brightly lit buildings and playing among the lights; stylish and musical trio Glacius entertain with their singing and their playing. Also joining the roving party, contemporary movement piece The Sharks, brings the whimsy. Aerial artists, flames and ballroom dancing round out the exciting events so there will be something for everyone.
There is even a chance to learn something this festival. Classes on night photography offer a unique chance to capture the night of lights. Other interactive elements of the festival include the glow room and where you can draw your own light designs and play with glow sticks, or you can even make an origami message to float on the water.
