On Sunday 15th November, 60 teams will marshal, ready and raring to roll with their bespoke vehicles, as part of this unique non-motorised race.
Experienced drivers and amateurs alike, who will have spent months building their dream cart, will finally show the masses what they’ve got. Tens of thousands of people will line the fences, anticipating the thrills and spills, while the official judges will have the tough job of marking the entrants on three key elements – creativity of design, showmanship and speed.
Those who were not game to get behind the wheel can still join the fun on the day – head up to Sydney’s Centennial Parklands for the race!
Tell us about your team
We are a few 23 yr old guys from the nation’s capital!
What do you all do for a living?
Aaron – Postie/construction
Mitch – Car sales/Personal Trainer
Dim – Electrician
How did the team get together?
Mitch and Dim have known each other since birth and Aaron met the 2 of them in high school
Tell us one thing about you that people wouldn’t expect to hear about each of you?
Mitch has a natural ability to connect with animals
Dim is a great soccer player and go kart racer
Aaron rode a tricycle at 85kph down a mountain
Have you built or ridden a billy cart before? If so, when / where and how did you rank?
We have all built billy carts at some point during our child hood, but have never competed in any competition.
What skills does each team member bring to the table?
Aaron brings a basic eye for design and construction and is good for getting projects off the ground.
Mitch brings out of the box thinking and is great for motivation. If he is not cracking jokes nonstop, he may find himself on the receiving end of a punch line
Dim has a great eye for detail and helps with the more important and finer details
What is your motivation for getting involved?
We all love Red Bull and have always wanted to be in a Red Bull event, so when we had the chance to enter in this competition we jumped on it as fast as we could!
Do you have a funny billy cart story from your childhood?
(Aaron) when I was younger I remember stacking onto a cart my cousins had made with another seven of them to try and ride it down a hill, we lost control halfway down and wound up getting catapulted up a gutter and into a neighbours garden.
What was the inspiration for your design?
We wanted to keep the design really fun and give the crowd something they can cheer for going down the hill.
What are the materials have you used / will you be using?
We will be using a steel frame as our base and we will then build on it with rubber, wood, and other metals.
How will you prepare for Red Bull Billy Cart?
A few test runs are definitely in order! We want our cart to be in fighting shape for the competition.
Do you have any secret tricks or tips to building a speedy cart?
We want it to be well balanced and hopefully steer well! If we can manage that then the rest should be easy!
Thanks guys! Good luck…
