With 2 bar stools, 4 staff and 2 taps, Canberra’s smallest bar is generating a whole heap of community spirit.
The Hutch was created by 4 local architects from Lonsdale street firm, Nathan Gibson Judd, with a passion for local beer and produce. Nathan Judd, Shai Lambert, Al Kirk and James Goodrick created The Hutch as a community hub and a place to chill and hang out with friends and colleagues over a drink.
At first glance the place doesn’t look like much, but as you squeeze into The Hutch it’s easy to see that the Canberra community has already started to make their mark on the plywood and steel construction. Patrons have signed their names on the stools and bar as per the owners request to make the space their own.
The initiative is based on the principles of community and simplicity. No cash is kept on the premises and all transactions are made via Eftpos. All beverages sold are the one price, $7 and on the most part sought by local producers.
Based on that principle of community spirit, The Hutch has been in the Canberra family since the word go. Local steel fabricators created the frame for the build, and sourced plywood was used to construct the interior and exterior by local tradesmen and the creators themselves. All the electrical work and fittings was installed by local business, Lifecycle Electrical who spent hours on end with the guys to make it all happen. Personally invested in the build, James (one of the creators) even lost part of his finger during the construction phase.
Currently The Hutch has local Zierholz beer on tap, but moving forward the boys hope to sign local suppliers for their cider and wine pours, as well as bar snacks.
Even though the business is still in the early stages of production there is an immense amount of potential for the bar in the local community. Already The Hutch is a popular hang out on a Friday night, Saturday and a frequent for a local Sunday session.
Looking forward the boys hope to action a number of additions to the plywood and steel construction, including a local herb garden for neighbouring businesses to enjoy.
Be sure to drop in to The Hutch and say hello to the boys for a cold brew this weekend.
