Being a sport fan means you get to indulge in rivalries that take the idea of barracking for your team to an entirely different level. Raiders fans truly hate The Broncos. Australian cricket fans hate The Poms. Everyone hates Collingwood.
So it is that this week Brumbies fans get their chance with the return of the NSW Waratahs this weekend at GIO Canberra Stadium.
Ugh… The Waratahs… Even typing their name brings about strong feelings of repugnance thanks to almost twenty years of festering feelings against the side from Sydney.
For those not familiar with the leather-patchers’ game, Brumbies fans have always dislikes the sneering attitude of the NSW Waratahs who see themselves as the guardians of all that is right and fair in rugby. This attitude has seen the Waratahs adopt a sense of entitlement – that they somehow should have been gifted a championship years before their narrow victory in 2014.
Similarly, the Australian Rugby Union has always considered that for the game to go well, the Waratahs need to win – a fact that doesn’t quite correspond with history. If you take into consideration that Brumbies players made up the majority of national side for a decade from the late 90s, then it’s clear that The Brumbies, with two titles from six finals, are the premier side in the Australian conference.
So, here we are again at Game Day. Bring it on!
The great news is that any trip down the Hume is a tough ask for the visiting Waratahs. Over the course of the rivalry between the two clubs, the away team has only won on two occasions. This is great news for our local heroes given their perilous state in the Super XV ladder. A bonus point win to The Brumbies would see them almost two wins ahead of NSW prior to heading off to South Africa while the ‘Tahs lick their wounds with a couple of home matches.
There’s going to be plenty of action out at the ground this Friday night. David Pocock is looking as good as he ever has, and with a good turn in this week’s match he won’t only pinch a lot of ball, but probably Michael Hooper’s Wallabies jumper as well.
We’re pretty excited about seeing the local lads send the Waratahs home humiliated again. Following a stunning win last Friday night, where The Brumbies’ forwards totally dominated the visiting Highlanders. Be sure to head out to the match and help to get the boys across the line.
