This week is NAIDOC Week where Australians come together to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Indigenous communities.
This week is a great opportunity to participate in a range of activities to help support your local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community and gain an insight into their culture.
If you’re not sure where to start, here are five not-to-be-missed events and activities to help you celebrate NAIDOC week in the nation’s capital.
Open Collections Guided Tour at the National Museum of Australia

Peruse a behind-the-scenes tour at the National Museum of Australia with a curator from the museum’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples team, in the special Open Collections area of the Gallery of First Australians.
Ancients Exhibition Opening at the Tuggeranong Arts Centre
6:00pm Thursday 7 July
Yuin artist Brett Carpenter presents a solo exhibition of photographs and watercolour pieces on canvas that explores and celebrates the natural, cultural and magical.
NAIDOC by the Lake… Singing Our Culture at the Belconnen Arts Centre
11:00am Saturday 9 July
Get down to the Belconnen Arts Centre for a rich program of live performances, food and art stalls, a jumping castle, film screenings and hands-on craft activities to celebrate NAIDOC Week 2016. Join in on some traditional weaving, sit around the campfire, or enjoy a program of local films by Indigenous filmmakers curated by Richard Jameson.
Songlines: Brenda Giffords and friends at Ainslie Arts Centre
4:00pm Saturday 9 July
Ainslie Arts Centre is set to present a NAIDOC Week concert Songlines by Australian musician Brenda Giffords. The performance will be complete with a mixed repertoire of jazz standards, spoken word and Aboriginal anthems.
Literary Lounge with Us Mob at the Tuggeranong Arts Centre
2:30pm Saturday 16 July
Us Mob is a group of First Nations People comprised of emerging and established writers, poets and playwrights. To celebrate NAIDOC Week the Us Mob will be performing their work at the Tuggeranong Arts Centre. Enjoy poetry, plays, songs, documentary films, short films, TV dramas, children’s storybooks, novels, short stories, biographies and much more.
