Burgers are everywhere, good ones and not so good ones, those with all kinds of sauce and weird combinations of food between two pieces of bread.
These delicious treats are are a constant in our world but which ones are the best ones?
It was a gruelling task to find out (I know, I know…). Here are the thoroughly-considered results.
London Burgers and Beers
Queanbeyan, Tuggeranong, Belconnen, Civic (closed due to fire).
One of the pioneers of gourmet burgers in Canberra, it’s always a pleasure to sit down to a meal at The London. There are plenty of options: a huge burger with chips or salad, schnitzels or fried chicken!
The best news? On Tuesdays ‘The Lot’ is only $10.00! Sit down with a few friends, a meal that will take you all day and a drink to ease the time. These are crunchy, textured, delicious burgers for special occasions.
Brodburger
Kingston Foreshore
A popular favourite. Just up from the Kingston Foreshore, Brodburger has made its home since their humble food van beginnings. Cooked fresh to order, Canberra has supported Brodburger through its growth, and continues to love their delicious Broddeluxe, Brodfin, Brodchicken and Brodveg burgers!
If you need proof, head down to Brodburger on a weekend to see Canberrans flocking around the Glassworks, willing to wait as long as it takes to get their hands on one. There is something so addictive about their homemade aioli and tomato relish that we all can’t get enough of!
Mr Papas
The Hamlet, Lonsdale St, Braddon
One of my favourite burgers comes from the Hamlet in Braddon. Canberra’s food truck heaven is home to Mr. Papa’s Peruvian food including the Chanchito – an exotic burger with sweet potato and succulent pork.
This is a colourful burger, a different experience than you’re average beef, tomato, lettuce and cheese. It’s been cooked slowly and it’s so tender. For an extra treat, add one of their zesty colourful sauces that are available from right on the windowsill and take on these monster burgers at one of the courtyard picnic tables.
Central Burger District
31 Mort Street, Braddon
I was very excited to try my first burger from Central Burger District. A quaint diner-style restaurant coloured in red and dark grey with cityscape wallpaper, the domain of the hard-boiled detective who also likes her burgers.
I went with the Mexican burger, beef with mushrooms beetroot and their own berko sauce. What a revelation! Aioli and tomato relish mixed in this delightful concotion called Berko sauce. I was surprised to like the beetroot (a bad experience had put me off them for years) but this trip converted me both to beetroot and Central Burger District.
Grill’d
Belconnen, Canberra Centre, Manuka, Woden
Grill’d is a very considerate burger place. Gluten-free buns, paninis, traditional buns and new low-carb bread make the burger accessible to those who would avoid it for dietary reasons. Between the buns is another story: herbed mayo, sweet chilli, tangy satay… and that’s just the chicken choices.
These meals are what we expect from a burger. They are succulent and moist almost to the point of greasy – but that’s okay. More than okay… it’s super satisfying! Grill’d is a ‘Yes’ for good burgers.

Canberra certainly has a range of options for any sort of burger almost anytime of day. I will be heading back to each one of these places soon – especially Central Burger District for some more o that beetroot and berko sauce!
