Have you just moved to Canberra? Let’s face it: this isn’t the easiest place in the world to live if you’re into live music, however there is an awesome scene here that covers a broad range of styles.

Long-time residents have dealt with the reality that while we are almost big enough to host major acts, most promoters assume Canberrans will simply drive up the road in order to get their fix of whichever international act is touring the country. That’s just the way it is.

However, things aren’t so bad. While Canberra lost a couple of great venues last year, there are plenty of other offerings for those who might be new to town and are seeking out a great gig.

The Great Gig in the Sky

Sadly, 2014 saw the end of big acts at University of Canberra – something of a stalwart in the music scene over the last 20 years. Many, many happy memories have been made out at UC Live, with 360, Frenzal Rhomb and Courtney Love providing some great shows last year. Stay tuned for news on the Stonefest and Groovin’ the Moo festivals, though. We expect both back in 2015.

It seemed to be gone before it arrived, but the troubled Chopshop in Braddon won a lot of fans for its dedication to grass roots music and arts. TKay Maidza had a great show there in November, and a massive New Year’s Eve party signalled the end of Chopshop’ lease. We expect to see Sancho and the gang back later this year with a new venue.

Contemporary/Rock/Hip-hop
It’s certainly no secret that Transit Bar is one of our favourites. The subterranean gig venue on Akuna Street has brought some of the most epic gigs to Canberra. With a so-close-you-can-touch-them atmosphere and a great reputation among touring artists, their Upcoming Shows list always features something to drool over.

For larger gigs, the ANU Bar is the place, with a long and proud heritage of some pretty amazing acts. In 1979, U2 played there (supporting Sherbet!) and let’s not forget that Nirvana literally tore the place apart in 1992. There’s more history to be made, so make sure you’re there for the next big show.

Dance
For over ten years, Academy Nightclub has played host to the best of EDM with touring DJs and live acts making the most of the massive sound system. If you like your house music a little harder a little harder, head on out to Trinity Bar in Dickson that brings the best of it’s breed for epic sets that will leave you reeling in the car park out front.

If you like your DJ sets deep and smooth, then head up to Monkey Bar for the latest from the world of Urban and RnB. Ever so fresh and so clean, this venue is the home of soulful sounds and has a loyal following that take advantage of its fun club nights.

Folk/indie
A new kid on the block, Smith’s Alternative has taken great steps by becoming a hub for fringe and cult musical performances and plays over the last couple of years. Grab yourself a whiskey and let a new experience wash over you.

One particular Canberra institution is The Phoenix. As the winner of the 2012 Music ACT Music Award for Best Live Venue, you cannot deny its proud heritage of supporting local musicians and smaller touring acts for over 20 years. It’s grungy, it’s dirty and it’s wonderful.
