It’s great to see Canberra’s Nick Kyrgios make it through to the quarterfinals of Men’s Singles at The Australian Open. The 18-year-old becomes the first teenager in 25 years to make a second appearance in grand slams at this level, and the whole country as well as this city will be right behind him.
Kyrgios plays the dour Andy Murray on Rod Laver Arena from 7.00pm tonight.
Meanwhile, in Newcastle, 22,000 football fans will cram into Hunter Stadium to cheer The Socceroos home against their surprise opposition, United Arab Emirates. Hardly a footballing giant, it’s hoped the UAE will provide little resistance to the Australian side who are coming off a brilliant victory against China.
The Asian Cup semi-final kicks off at 8.00pm.
