The 28th International Short Film Festival has made its way to the Capital once again! Flickerfest is known as Australia’s leading short film festival, presenting a series of A-list films from some of the nation’s most creative talent. Just like the best of any bunch out there, they have been hand-picked from the festivals’ 2,700 entries with highlights now circulating the country.

Palace Electric Cinemas in New Acton are the graced hosts of this one night wonder. On Thursday 4th of April at 7pm, the ‘Best of Australian Shorts’ will screen including a number of films from our very own Canberrans followed by a fully catered afterparty.

Aussie comedian Paul McDermott who grew up in Canberra has written and directed Ghostbear, a beautifully animated film where Ghostbear tackles the disappearing animals of our planet and tells the story of a popular bear cub wandering the arctic in search of his place in the world.

Another highlight, Della Mortika Carousel of Shame was the brainchild of Canberran mother and daughter duo, Geraldine and Marisa Martin who created their masterpiece over 7 years. It tells a story of three sisters ‘where steam is king, where life is hard and where adventure is always adventure.’ A proud moment for us locals, Della Mortika won Best Australian Animation at Flickerfest 2019.

Other notable films of the programme include Gracie Otto’s Desert Dash which tells a fantasy story of the outskirts of Australia where opals are the currency of survival. Forget Mario Kart, we’re playing in a game of Desert Dash.

The winner of the Palme d’Or Cannes in 2018 and Best Editing in Australia is also on show. Family drama All These Creatures makes for a moving experience, where ‘an adolescent boy attempts to untangle his memories of a mysterious infestation, the unravelling of his father and the little creatures inside us all.’ To follow, legendary actor Jack Thompson stars in Home.

The festival won’t fall short of cutting-edge talent from every genre!
