Canberra born and bred DJ Rush is one of Australia’s most well-known DJs and is fast climbing the ranks of success. He even reveals a secret project he is working on.
28 year old Rush started DJing when he was 18 at parties, private functions and he was a huge fan of making mixed cassette tapes for his mates.
“I loved music. I was always up to date with all the music and people would come up to me for new music”.
The next step was to save up and buy his own turn tables. He did just that and realised that this was something he could turn into a career.
Rush took his DJing to a new level by playing at old Canberra favourites (that are no longer there) such as Stylus and FMs. Soon after, he started to get gigs in Sydney and in 2006, managed to tee up a three-month internship in LA with DJ Skee who was a DJ for rap superstar, The Game.
“I used to host a radio show called Hot 91 and I interviewed people on there like Chris Brown, Hill Top Hoods, Chopper and DJ Skee was one of the people I interviewed. I was finishing up my degree at The School of Art at ANU at the time and he said come over to LA and intern with me”.
Interning in LA was one of the best things Rush could of done. He worked on various TV shows and even organised after parties for the Grammies.
“In Canberra, people ask what I do and I say I’m a DJ and they are like oh that’s nice, but what’s your real job? In America, when people ask what you do and you tell them, they are like oh yeah sweet. They take you seriously. I feel I brought that mentality of taking what I do seriously back to Canberra.”
He interacted with celebrities such as Kim Kardashian and Fall Out Boy and when he returned to Australia, there was a lot of hype about the celebrities he had interviewed. Rush released a mix tape called California Dreaming and toured Australia promoting this album.
Not just a DJ and a pretty face, Rush is also a business entrepreneur. In 2007 he started up the successful Spader clothing with two others.
“We are gearing up for our winter launch soon and its coming along really well. This new range is the best range we have ever done. I am so excited about it”.
When Rush is not spinning the decks, he is a talented photographer. So talented, that he has a project coming up that will excite many.
When Rush was in Melbourne recently, he struck up a friendship with MTV host and fashion icon, Ruby Rose. Already having done a couple of photo shoots with Rose, the young DJ is now going to photograph her life over the next 18-months and release a book in 2013, just before Christmas.
“I’m going to be shooting everything about her – her as a DJ, her celebrity life, her lesbian life, her close relationship with her mum and grandma, her love for her dog, living on the road and living out of a suitcase. I want to show people a different side to her.”
Rush is incredibly excited to be working with Ruby Rose and can’t wait to get started.
“She’s so photographic and I want to focus on her tattoos, her hair and fashion.”
Rush is a pretty busy man at the moment, DJing around clubs in Canberra, working on his radio show ‘The Rush Hour’ on Raw FM, collaborating with Ruby Rose and there is rumors of him releasing a new mix tape.
What will he come up with next? Stay tuned
