Canberra is becoming a familiar city for Thelma Plum, already supporting both Bob Evans and Emma Louise on national tours in recent months. It was fitting then that the 18 year old took to the intimate Transit bar on Thursday to launch her first ever headline tour.
Transit bar is famously associated with questionable karaoke singing and it was Starry Field who was offered the chance to show that quality performers do grace the intimate stage. Warming the packed crowd was the task for the sole performer who did not disappoint in front of the receptive audience. Mark Myers was charismatic as he gently played out his catchy Country-Pop arsenal.
As the support act cleared the stage the crowd of Uni students separated from the older demographic to line the bar and await the main act drink in hand. One drink turned to two as Thelma kept us waiting.
When she finally took the stage with friend and fellow acoustic strummer Andrew Lowden, the crammed audience inched forward to file around the stage.
The pair focused on tracks from new EP Rosie, lifting through signature songs Around Here and Rosie. Changing the tone the artists even treated the crowd to a unique hip hop rendition of Jeremiah’s Birthday Sex.
However, the obvious highlight was Dollar- having the crowd clapping along to the signature beat.
Speaking with the elated Thelma after the show she revealed that she had always planned to begin her national tour in the capital, not least of all for ‘the good looking guys’.
Thelma Plum proved once again to hold talent beyond her years. With the audience growing significantly each time I see her perform expect her to be playing in venues on a much larger scale on her inevitable return.
