Hunting down a burrito in Canberra is no hard thing. In fact, you can nab a soft tortilla meal on the run or sit happily in a restaurant, licking up every last grain of rice in pretty much any corner of the city.
Pick the north, the south or the city centre – they’re all pretty delicious.
Quick bites in the North
For mall moochers in Westfield Belconnen, Guzman Y Gomez is your go-to. The humble burrito, mini burrito and the bowl of burrito amazingness all come with a multitude of fillings (including gluten-free options). It’s always a safe bet to order extra Jack cheese (even if it is still breakfast hour) and Pico de Gallo. As the folk at GYG say, ¡buen provecho! (bon appetite) = enjoy!
Quick bites and sit-down treats in The City
Busy folk, students on campus and commuters passing through the city bus interchange – Zambrero outlets are for you. There are 10 throughout Canberra offering 12 inch burritos and three of these hubs are within spitting distance of each other – within The Canberra Centre, on the corner of the bus interchange and on-campus at ANU. Word is, the Chipotle sauce is a fab ‘pick-me-up’ between uni lectures.
For breakfast seekers in town early in the morning, Smoque offers an alternative to the standard scrambled eggs…a breakfast burrito laden with egg, chorizo and tater tots to boot. If this sounds a bit too much for breakfast hour, then hang out for lunch and enjoy a sit-down delight at Sweet Bones on Lonsdale Street in Braddon. They’re famous for their Boneyard Burrito which comes stuffed with sweet potato and ‘massaged kale’ of all things.
Prefer to nail a late burrito lunch (perhaps of the lime prawn variety) alongside a frozen margarita? Then definitely take a few hours out at Cantina/Beach Burrito in City Walk. The menu is fat with all things burrito and Friday and Saturday nights pulse to live DJ beats.
Around the corner (well as few corners), Lucky’s at QT Hotel has been known to dish out tiny burritos during happy hour, so if the craving hits and you happen to be in the area, get there from 5.00pm-7.00pm.
Quick bites & sit down treats Southside
Kingston markets and Manuka are top choices for weekend burrito indulging. Age-old Caphs in Manuka serves up a Brekky Burrito unconventionally(but yummily) stuffed with bacon and, on Sundays, Taco Way opens for hungry market goers at The Old Bus Depot Markets between 9.00am and 3.30pm. The family team offer a breakfast burrito, the standard-any-time-of-the-day burrito and promise to tone down the level of chillies generally stipulated in Northern Mexican cooking.
