Fusion Cafe and Grill resides in the space previously occupied by The Asian Noodle House. The timber floor, the original since the Sydney Building was constructed back in 1920s shines through with memories of the generations that have passed through over the decades. Classic cafe chairs add to the sense of history, and the room echoes with the chatter of customers – like ghosts from those bygone days. For fans of the Mediterranean architectural style, ceiling florets hark back the building’s origins.
Since opening in early August, Fusion has ahead a strong focus on simplicity. Forget about the trimmings that distract from the quality of the food – at Fusion the menu is the focus is very much on what is on the menu.
Sampling the beef burger, we were taken back to memories of beachside take-aways. Served with French fries. Classic Aussie style (including the beetroot!) with aoli and onion chutney and served with a side of garden salad (just to make you feel a little healthier!)
For the curry lovers, the Lamb Korma Curry certainly hits the spot. Served with pappadum, saffron rice and raita, the lamb is deliciously tender, melting in your mouth just before the gentle hit of the warm curry flows through. The zesty riata provides a refuge for those not so used to warm (but not too hot) spices
The pièce de résistance is the Fusion Skewer. It’s an imposing dish with prawns, beef chicken and lamb kofta served on a skewer that would make a sword-swallower’s eyes water. However, don’t think of this as some sort of challenge. Once separated from the skewer the dish becomes more like a tasting plate, with roast tomatoes, onion and capsicum, more saffron rice and a garden salad to help you along.
To finish, you can refresh yourself with a cup of coffee or tea. The Giancarlo blend – provided by Grinders Coffee – is subtle on the palate. Those making their way to work along Northbourne Avenue in the morning can grab themselves a takeaway through the folding windows located near the coffee machine. Temple Teas are available in many traditional flavours.
