Long Rail Gully Winery is little to the north of the village of Murrumbateman in the cool climate wine growing region of the Canberra district. The property was originally part of the Merryville Stud, which was famous for its merino sheep bloodlines that produced exceptionally high quality fine wool. Its soils and climatic conditions are now proving themselves as an excellent combination for the production of fine wines. The farms sheep grazing history is the inspiration for its label.
Helm Wines was established in 1973 and was one of the first commercial wineries in the Canberra District Wine Region. Located just outside of Murrumbateman, approximately 30 kilometres north of Canberra, the winery was given a five-star rating in James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion 2012.
The winery uses a combination of modern and traditional equipment and adopts a minimalist approach to winemaking, so that what you get in the bottle is as close as possible to what came out of the vine.
Four Winds Vineyard planted its 33-acre vineyard in 1998 and 1999 with five varieties; shiraz, riesling, cabernet, merlot and sangiovese.
The family vineyard was planted 17 years ago and boasts a new cellar door which was completed in 2013. Stroll through the vineyard and you will see its delightful old wooden picking bins and wine barrels throughout the tasting room – truly a spectacular experience.
Capital Wines is a boutique winery. Its renowned Kyeema Vineyard and winery are located on an elevated granite hill with breathtaking views looking over the rolling hills of the Murrumbidgee valley to the Brindabellas.
The vineyard produces exceptional quality fruit and is one of a small handful of Canberra vineyards to produce old vine shiraz. It has the enviable reputation of vines that are an old Penfold’s clone. The combination of age and clone make them unique within the region.
