Camping. For me, this word conjures memories of not-so-waterproof tents on the rainiest night of the year, mosquito bites, and general grumpiness that comes with spending an extended period of time in close quarters with your immediate family. Needless to say, it’s been a while since I’ve slept under the stars. An upcoming visit from overseas relatives, however, has made me reconsider this whole camping thing. What better way to show off the beautiful Australian landscape than to spend some time in the great outdoors?

Here’s what I’ve found on the best camping grounds in (and around) Canberra:

Capital Country Holiday Village (from $38 for Tent sites, from $95 for Cabins)
Capital Country Holiday Village is set on 10 hectares, with varying accommodation options. From ensuite park cabins to campsites, there is something to cater for all requirements. Entertainment facilities include barbeque areas, playgrounds, tennis courts, and even a swimming pool, to name but a few.

Exhibition Park (from $30)
Just an eight minute drive from the city centre, Exhibition Park is perfect if you’re looking for a rural escape, without the inconvenience of being in the middle of nowhere. It’s also pet friendly!

Cotter Campground (from $12)
If you’re wanting an authentic “camping” experience, look no further than the Cotter Campground. Not only is it in a stunning location, the campground is also the most highly serviced bushland camping area in the ACT.

Canberra Carotel (from $95)
Accommodation options of bungalows, cabins, villas and lodges makes Canberra Carotel the place if, like me, you’re less than keen for a not-so-waterproof tent experience. Located seven kilometres from the city centre, this park is the place to stay if you’d also like to explore some of Canberra’s best attractions.

Here’s hoping that my Christmas family camping trip this year is more marshmallow-roasting, less mosquito-swatting!
