If you were to ask me how I’d like to celebrate a particular event, I’d probably say: “Let’s do High Tea!” This year especially, my sisters and I have taken to trying the different High Teas around Canberra… and there certainly are plenty to choose from! With the weather warming up, now is the perfect time to don your best spring dress and head out for something that’s just a little bit fancier than your average brunch.
Here are some of my suggestions of where to have high tea in Canberra:

Hyatt Hotel
120 Commonwealth Avenue, Yarralumla
Every Canberran needs to experience a High Tea at the Hyatt Hotel at least once in their lives. The hotel is marvellously swanky with rich décor and big chandeliers – enough to make anyone feel like royalty (if only for a few hours)! Tables, laden with all sorts of delicious-looking (and tasting!) pastries, desserts, and sandwiches, line the middle of the room and you can revisit as many times as you like.
I would definitely recommend getting a table on the deck – the outdoor area is quite stunning. Taking High Tea and looking out onto a small courtyard garden makes one feel as though you’ve been transported to the English countryside!
Museum of Australian Democracy
18 King George Terrace, Parkes
For my 19th birthday at the beginning of the year, my mum organised for us to have High Tea at Old Parliament House. Something about this amazing building feels so elegant, and the café where High Tea is held overlooks the stunning gardens. The whole experience was incredibly tranquil and the food was delicious.
Burbury Hotel
Burbury Cl, Barton
Another option if you’re hoping for something a little (read: very) fancy is Burbury Hotel. For Mother’s Day my sisters and I took our mum here, and it was such a fun afternoon. The High Tea takes place on the highest floor of the Hotel overlooking the city, the lake and Barton. The weather on Mother’s Day was quite rainy, so we didn’t really get to enjoy the view. On the upside, the low-hanging clouds and big windows made it seem as though we were floating in the sky… which was quite cool! Not as cool, though, as the selection of French cakes, tarts, scones and savoury items part of the High Tea menu!
Adore Tea
O’Hanlon Pl, Nicholls
Anyone who calls themselves a tea-lover needs to visit Adore, which is no ordinary tea-shop. From rooibos to English Breakfast, there’s something for everyone’s taste and the knowledgeable staff are more than happy to help you find what you’re looking for. High Tea costs $48.00 per person and is served every Saturday, at 11.30am and 2.00pm, and also on the second Sunday of every month.
