Ready for what is set to be another challenging season, University of Canberra Brumbies young guns Anthony Hegarty and Nic White took a break from their busy training schedules to speak with us about their football careers, goals for the season and future prospects.

Born and raised in Canberra, Anthony Hegarty has represented the ACT right through his schooling years and has been a part of the Brumbies Academy since finishing school. When asked about his rugby achievements (playing for the Brumbies), Hegarty’s response was modest, suggesting that coming up through the playing ranks was the combination of hard work, with a calm, reasonable yet motivated approach.

Now in his second full year with the professional squad and a modest 8 super rugby caps under his belt, Hegarty is looking to play as many games as possible this season by remaining injury free and cementing his place in the game day squad (of 22).

21-year-old Brumbies scrumhalf Nic White, originally from the northern NSW country town of Maitland, has made his way into the full-time Super Rugby squad for the 2012 season. White was spotted in 2010 by former Brumbies player and forwards coach Owen Finnegan while playing club rugby in Canberra and was asked to try out for the Brumbies.

White is looking forward to the season, hoping to secure the prized No.9 jersey and help lead the Brumbies to a successful start to the season. Nothing is stopping this young gun from his long-term goals, which ultimately includes a spot in the Wallabies.

Two motivated young men ready for the gruelling 2012 season, Hegarty and White are hoping the cards fall their way with selection in the squad for the first game of the season on Friday the 24th of February against the Western Force. Kick-off is at 7.40pm at Canberra Stadium.
