Getting in shape requires dedication and commitment. Once you’ve set some goals, it should be easy to get in the gym and hit them, right? Well, according to Tyler Stevens – personal trainer and owner of Eighty8 Fitness – that’s not always case.

“I’ve probably heard every excuse under the sun” says Tyler. So, naturally we were interested to see what people were coming up with… (*cough* we’re definitely guilty for a few of these…)

1. “I’m 5 episodes deep into Game of Thrones and can’t move off the couch”

2. “I’m not fit enough for a HIIT class” OR “I need to get in shape first to do a class”
No, no you don’t… Consistency, dedication and determination in attending classes will get you into shape. All classes are designed AND then modified on the go to accommodate for all levels of fitness!

3. “OK I’ll 100% start next week” Tuesday week I receive a text… “Look I missed Monday and I ate a pizza today, I think I’ll just start next week”

4. “My diets in check, I don’t need to exercise”
OK this one really gets to me. Having a balanced nutrition and an exercise plan go hand in hand. There’s no excuse for not being able to get out a quick 30 minute HIITStrength session within your 24 hour day. If anything you should be excited to train, knowing that you have fuelled your body with the right healthy foods to help you get the best out of your training session.

5. Whilst waiting for a Friend to turn up for their PT session, I receive a text “I think I’m dead, can’t make the sesh today”
I must say it had me laughing!

6. Canberra winter arrives.. “It’s way to cold to get up and train”
Seriously! Your body produces energy which results in heat.. This occurs within the first 5 minutes of your session, I think we call it the “Warm up”.

7. Canberra summer arrives.. “Nope, It’s way too hot to go outside and train”
Fortunately most gyms are equipped with AC and fans. Grab a water bottle, keep hydrated and you’re set!

8. “My Boyfriend said I’m spending way too much time in the gym and he thinks I have a crush on you”

9. “I’ve just spotted an ant in the kitchen and I think there is a possibility more might follow, I just don’t think I can leave the house right now, I’ll have to rebook”
Yep, an ant…

10. “Those guys/ girls are way too fit, I’ll look stupid”
No one was born being able to squat 60kg and run 10km. The only way to get fit is to start exercising… I know right such a surprise! Start slowly and if needed seek guidance from a fitness professional on how to set a fitness plan and build a balanced routine.
