The Race that Stops a Nation is less than one week away. Have you got your outfit sorted? Your bets decided? We spoke to Emily, the current Face of Canberra Racing about what it’s like to be the ambassador on a day such as Melbourne Cup!
1. What’s the most exciting part leading up to The Melbourne Cup as the Myer Face of Canberra Racing?
I’ve been very busy with a lot of PR activities. Fashion shoots and interviews and helping the new Melbourne Cup Fashions on the field sponsor, Canberra Outlet Centre with finding race wear looks for under $100. It doesn’t cost a lot to get your race wear outfit together and the Canberra Outlet Centre has some fantastic retailers to help with everything you need.
2. Do you have any tips for the ladies looking to enter the Canberra Outlet Centre Fashions on the Field?
Millinery. It’s all about the hat. It’s the best investment anyone can make if they like to attend the races. Match it to your dress and you will have the perfect race day look, the accessories and makeup are easy. The perfect example is the winner of this years’ Myer Fashions on the field at the Black Opal Stakes, her dress was from ASOS, but her hat was professionally made. It completed her look. This Spring it’s all about pastels and Japanese influences so I am excited to see the fashion.
3. For you, what makes a fantastic day at Thoroughbred Park for the races?
Hearing the race caller on the load speaker as the horses are rounding the turn. There is nothing like being at the races on a big day, whether it’s the Melbourne Cup Race Day or Black Opal Stakes and the cheer from the huge crowd in the grandstands. You don’t get that atmosphere anywhere else. The fashions are also fantastic on course, there is nothing better than seeing someone with immaculate presentation, wearing a beautifully made hat or the perfectly tailored suit and accessories. I am sure the guys love it as much as the ladies!
4. What are your 5 Race Day Ready necessities?
Hydration. Make sure you have water throughout the day. Keep well hydrated.
Sunscreen. Whilst I am all for getting a bit of Vitamin D, having a horrible sunburn to deal with is uncomfortable and doesn’t look pretty.
A hot tip. There is always a buzz of excitement when you have a hot tip in a race. Makes for a good conversation starter with a friendly stranger as well! You have 7 races at Thoroughbred Park to choose a winner!
For the ladies, a spare pair of flats – it’s a long day and you don’t want to be one of those ladies carrying their heels. Put some flats in your handbag or leave them in your car to swap them over before you cab it to the after party!
Nourishment, luckily Thoroughbred Park have plenty of food outlets so make sure you grab something to nibble on during the day. Have a good breakfast packed with protein and carbs for energy.
Thanks Emily, we hope to see you around on Tuesday!
Don’t forget that buses will be leaving Thoroughbred Park at various times between 4:00pm and 7:00pm. And the usual paid Route 56 ACTION buses will be running too.
If you want to enter the Canberra Outlet Centre Fashions on the Field make sure you register between 12:00pm and 1:00pm!
