As creative pockets continue to bubble underneath the city’s surface, Canberra anticipates the release of Sketching Process, a 200-page sketching book, that is sure to ignite innovation and act as a beacon of inspiration to many across the country.
Spearheaded by Australian designer and director of SKEEHAN studio, Tom Skeehan, Sketching Process is targeted at anyone with an interest in art, design or simply an insight into contemporary design-thinking.
Featuring leading Australian designers and their sketching process, the book delves into the articulate process of putting pen to paper and illustrating concept designs across a number of disciplines including furniture, lighting, product design, fashion, automotive, styling, architecture and typography.
“The book is an instructional and inspirational guide to developing hand-drawing skills, from basic principles through to advanced techniques,” Skeehan explains.
“The book is built like a text book – teaching readers how to draw, understand objects and the process you go through to construct it correctly in proportion.”
A peruse through the publication unearths a myriad of contributing designers, most of which Skeehan says are his mentors and creatives that he has always admired. It also features designer profiles, tutorials and insightful Q&As throughout.
“To me that is at the heart of the project,” he says.
“I wanted to tell a story about how important sketching as a skill is, so I reached out to designers who all share that passion.”
Skeehan believes that design drawing is one of the most important skills that creatives can develop throughout their career.
“It’s a universal language and a wonderful way to communicate your own thoughts and ideas with clients, colleagues and manufactures,” he adds.
The publication has taken two years in the making, and during this time Skeehan says that it has allowed him to tap into a really unique and intimate part of the industry.
“Each creative has their own style and process – it’s been amazing to work with passionate designers and hear their stories. It has also influenced the way I design and documented my own ideas,” he says.
Sketching Process will attempt to achieve crowd funding goal of $13,000 via Kickstater to help account for the first edition’s printing.
To coincide with the Kickstarter launch, the Sketching Process team will be hosting a launch party at Nishi Gallery on Friday October 28 from 6pm. The event is open to the public.
