Want to know what gigs Canberra has on offer this month? Here are some of the various hotspots which are featuring great live music this month:
Transit has a variety of different artists this month beginning with up-and-comer Oz rapper Dylan Joel on Thursday 9 June. Coming off tours with Illy and Seth Sentry, Dylan Joel brings a brand-new show with promises of a few previously unheard tunes.
Saturday 18 June brings Canberra dance party Gay Cliché with a variety of DJs and good vibes. With $10 entry at the door, 50 percent of Gay Cliché profits will go to Carers ACT.
Winding back the clock on 24 June is a tribute to rock classics Deep Purple and Whitesnake. While Deep Purple is unfortunately most famous for having the first song everyone learns on guitar, they created many other great hits such as Highway Star & Speed King, but the ultimate pump-up song Here I Go Again by Whitesnake will be enough for entry alone.
Urthboy headlines a list of acts on Friday 10 June in what is sure to be a big night for the club. Urthboy busted onto the music scene in 2004 with Come Around and has since performed at Groovin The Moo and Big Day Out. He wrote a moving tribute to Phillip Hughes named Nambucca Boy and is also a great political activist through his songs, in particular targeting the horrible events taking place on Manus Island.
Academy hosts Canberra locals Hands like Houses on Friday 24 June. The alternative rock band has two EPs and three albums since forming in 2008, with their latest Dissonants making it to number seven on the Australian album charts this year.
Queanbeyan pub band The Vee Bees perform on Saturday 11 June. With influences from Motorhead and The Ramones, the band describes themselves as apart of the “wonderful world of Fair Dinkum Rock N Roll”.
The Brass Knuckle Brass Band performs on Friday 17 June. Well-known around Canberra, they were first thrown together for a one-off Wednesday night show, BKBB have opened for funk heavyweights Charles Barley and Fred Wesley and have performed at Falls Festival and Woodford Folk Festival.
Once a month The Phoenix hosts the best Latin bands in town known as Friday Night Fiesta. This time on 24 June, the event features FunkyTrop, an exciting seven-piece Latin orchestra formed in 2014.
