As the weather gets colder and colder, it’s incredibly tempting to hop off the fitness bandwagon for a few months. Keeping fit isn’t just about looking good, but feeling good too.

I find that if I’ve been cooped up all day, the best thing to do is to get outside and take a walk, braving the cold for half an hour or so. But, if you’re really keen to stay indoors, here are a few ideas of places to go to help keep fit in the colder months.

Eighty8 Fitness
Of course the obvious answer to this dilemma is to join a gym for the winter months. Eccentric Health and Fitness is Canberra’s leading boutique gym. With memberships starting at just $15.00 a week with 24/7 access, there really is no excuse or ‘right time’ to start!
There are lots of group classes to get involved in too, if you’re in need of some moral support. Check out their website and get active! www.eighty8fitness.com.au

Indoor Pools
Missing the summer swimming season? Join an indoor pool for the winter! CISAC Belconnen is the largest indoor aquatic facility in Canberra. With 10 lanes in the 50 metre pool and a five lane 25m pool, there’s something for both beginners and advanced swimmers alike.

If you’re looking for a pool that’s a little closer to the city, try the Canberra Olympic Pool, located in Allara Street. With three pools, including one specifically for toddlers, the Canberra Olympic Pool is great for the whole family.

Snow Day
One of the great things about Canberra is how close we are to Perisher and Selwyn, meaning that a snow day is only a couple of hours drive away! Skiing and snowboarding are pretty rigorous exercises, but you don’t really even notice that you’re working out because you’re having so much fun!

Snowball fights are also a great way to get some inadvertent exercise – it’s pretty difficult trying to run in snow!

Indoor Rock-Climbing
Sometimes it’s good to try something a bit more adventurous, and if you’ve done rock-climbing before, you’ll know that it is a serious work out. Canberra Indoor Rock-Climbing has two centres, one in Hume and the other in Mitchell. It would be a perfect place if you want to work out with a group of friends.

Entry for adults, with the harness included, is $24.00. Rock climbing is the thing to do if you’d like to get out your comfort zone, try something new, and also have a lot of fun!
