Have you ever walked into an event or wedding and asked yourself the question. Did I get the dress code wrong? I know I have and quite frankly it can be a little embarrassing. I went to a wedding once and the dress code was FORMAL. Boy, did I feel as though I was the only one that got the memo.
As a stylist, I believe that dressing for the code, is very important. Not only does it help you decide what to wear but it indicates, an expectation that invitee is setting on their guest. They are basically telling you what not to wear.
So, it got me thinking. Do people actually know what dress codes stand for? I know that it can get a little confusing, as there are so many different dress codes. But really there are only a few that you really need to know.
The top four dress codes you need to know;
FORMAL also known as BLACK TIE – Ladies, it is a full length gown. You should be thinking like you are about to walk the red carpet. Your hair should be up, if you don’t like it up you can wear it down. Just make sure it looks done. Your accessories should sparkle.
Men, this is where you three piece suit come into it. Black and Navy are great colour choices. Teamed with a crisp white, doubled cuffed shirt. Don’t forget to accessorise with cuff links. Make sure your shoes a polished. And you are wearing the correct dinner shoe, with your suit. When it comes to the tailoring of your pants, the hem should sit on the middle of the heel, nothing shorter.
COCKTAIL – Ladies, you can always go for you LBD. (Little black dress). But when it comes to cocktail, this is where you can have a little more fun, your personality can really shine. Think of fun and flirty, not short and tarty. Your dress length can be anything from mid-thigh down. Aline- would be a great option.
Men, this is where you can be a little more adventures. This is where you can wear your coloured shirts and printed suits. You don’t have to wear a tie, although if you wanted to, I would opt for a thinner tie.
GARDEN – Ladies, Pretty is what you want to aim for. Florals are a great option. A long flowy maxi dress, would be my choice. When it comes to your shoes, I would opt for a wedged heel, they give you height and they will prevent you from digging into the ground. Sandals, are also a great option, if you were not needing the height behind you. Hats, are also a great accessories, for garden themed events.
Men, I would stay away from wearing a suit in this insist. Go for a trouser or a chino, teamed with a nice shirt, it doesn’t have to be buttoned all the way up. Just remember showing too much chest isn’t a nice look either. When it comes to your shoes, a nice loafer would be great.
LOUNGE – This is the one I get asked about a lot. I think that it can get a little confusing, especially for us woman. As I believe this one is really aimed at the men. Ladies, I would just a nice dress -nothing to dressy but nothing to casual either. A jumpsuit would be the perfect option for this code.
Men, Think James Bond, the basic black suit, with a white shirt, with a couple of buttons un-done. Definitely, NO tie. A relaxed look.
There you have it. Next time, take note of the DRESS CODE. It is there for a reason.
