Put your dancing shoes on for 100 years of social dance, enjoy a huge range of sporting events and compete among aspiring designers. The next couple of years brings plays, exhibitions, live music and newly published books to Australia’s capital.
On 12 March, 2013, the whole of Australia will celebrate 100 years since Lady Denman, wife of the then Governor General Lord Denman, stood upon the newly laid Foundation Stones and officially named the new Australian Capital, ‘Canberra’.
The Centenary of Canberra celebrates the beauty, culture and heritage of Australia’s capital city. Creative Director Robyn Archer AO has organised a year-long calendar of events which will showcase the best of what goes on in Canberra.
2013 is set to be a big year for Canberra with lots of events happening. Below are some of the most exciting events that will really capture the essence of what Canberra is all about!
The National Arboretum Canberra grand opening is scheduled for 1st February 2013 and is set to become a centerpiece of Centenary of Canberra celebrations and is predicted to become one of Canberra’s most popular tourist attractions. Stretching over 250 hectares, the site encompasses an existing stand of 5,000 Himalayan cedars and the 80-year-old Cork oak plantation. Visitors will also delight in a bonsai pavilion, artworks, a café/restaurant and reflective pavilion.
2013 is set to be a huge showcase of sporting events in the nation’s capital. Canberran’s love their sport and already, two major international sporting have been announced for 2013 – the ISPS Handa Astralian Women’s Open and the British and Irish Lions Vs. Brumbies.
For those who like to get down and boogy, Kick Up Your Heels will excite you. This program celebrates a century of dance from 1900 right through to the noughties. In 2013, these monthly dances will take participants back to a period of social dance. Each session will feature, in sequence, the dance styles predominant in each decade, the music that was played and in the venue where the dances took place. The historical Albert Hall will also play home to a lot of these dances.
