The Like Canberra website has recorded more than 120,200 votes by more than 10,000 voters keen to ensure that their favourite Canberra place, activity or experience is included in the top 100 things to like about our national capital.
Voting ends in just a few days on Thursday 28 February, and Centenary of Canberra Executive Director Jeremy Lasek is urging everyone to cast their final votes by 5pm that day.
“As with all elections, we expect there will be a rush of last-minute voters,” Mr Lasek said.
“So make sure you visit the website well before the closing time and cast your vote for all the things you see as special about living here.”
In the first stage of the Like Canberra campaign, people visiting the website nominated 13,741 reasons why they like Canberra. These were sorted into a list of nominations across a number of categories, and voting opened on 14 January.
Mr Lasek said that while some nominations were fairly predictable, others showed a wide range of sometimes surprising things Canberrans hold dear.
“As well as providing a year-long program of events and activities, I think our big Centenary year is acting as a catalyst for reflecting on Canberra and what it means to live and work here compared with other cities,” he said.
“The Like Canberra campaign is reinforcing the pride we feel in our city – and giving us plenty of responses to knockers into the bargain.”
The top four themes to emerge from stage one of the campaign were outdoor living (outdoor activities); nature (no pollution, open spaces, great views, access to countryside); ease of living (everything is so close that you can do so much on a weekend); and community feel (we have the facilities of a big city, but haven’t lost the community feel; knowing your neighbours).
The list of top 100 reasons to like Canberra and an accompanying poster will be launched on Saturday 16 March.
