The Allaince Française French Film Festival is celebrating its 30th anniversary, showcasing its biggest year yet.
Thursday 7 March saw the opening of the festival, with champagne served in the Palace Electric lounge area prior to the first film. A representative from the the Allaince Française introduced the festival, speaking of its long history within Canberra and the many partners who assist in making it such a success.
The Trouble With You was one of the biggest audience hits of Cannes 2018, premiering as the centrepiece of the Director’s Fortnight section. Directed by Pierre Salvadori (Wild Target, Après Vous), it followed detective Yvonne (Adèle Haenel), the young widow of a police chief who was killed in the line of duty.
After learning that her husband was a crooked cop who’s actions led to an innocent man, Antione (Pio Marmaï), being falsely imprisoned for eight years, Yvonne decides to help the unfortunate parolee return to his old life and fiancé. Antione has some trouble integrating back into society, causing a chain of events that throw Yvonne’s moral and romantic duties on the line.
The Trouble With You is a chaotic, hilarious ride that blends romance, comedy and action in an appealing mix. The entire cast put on an exceptional show, with Marmaï’s unhinged performance a standout. Salvadori does a great job of keeping the sometimes-frantic momentum up throughout the entire film, without overcomplicating the plot.
After the film, Ovolo Nishi hosted a spread and entertainment in the Nishi Building foyer, complete with cheese, wine, macaroons, and beautiful music courtesy of the Canberra International Music Festival.
