The Thredbo Jazz Festival celebrates 27 years of Jazz in Australia this year and we spoke to one of the artists, soul singer Ms Murphy – who appeared onThe Voice.
Ms Murphy is a must-see act at this year’s Festival in the gorgeous surrounds of Thredbo. It starts today and goes until Sunday May 4th – so if you feel like getting away for the weekend, this event is the perfect opportunity!
Q. Are you looking forward to playing Thredbo Jazz Festival?
Yes, I’m looking forward to playing at this year’s Thredbo Jazz Festival. It’s the 27th Annual Festival so I feel very privileged and honoured to be part of it all. It’s going to be great.
Q. Are there any acts on the line up you are looking to see play?
I’m really looking forward to Mahalia Barnes playing, and Righteous Voodoo, I’m a big fan of Righteous Voodoo, I love them and I go and watch them any opportunity I can get so I’m really looking forward to that.
Q. Is this your first time playing the festival?
Ms Murphy: This is my first time playing at a festival ever so this is quite an experience for me and one that I’ve been waiting for. I’ve been waiting for a festival to come and ask me to sing, this is the first one for me so I’m very excited.
Q. What can we expect from your set at Thredbo Jazz Festival?
Ms Murphy: From me you’ll expect a lot of love in my set. I love love and I love music so the combination together is uh… a real celebration for me. I love to celebrate music and involve everybody.
Q. What does jazz mean to you?
Ms Murphy: Jazz music for me is very challenging it opens your mind and your heart to different elements of music. It’s very expressive and it fuses a lot of different genres together which is what I love about jazz. So I’m really looking forward to being educated by other artists that are going there and hopefully I’ll be able to contribute something to them as well.
Q. Are you currently working on any new material?
Currently I’m working on some original music that I’ll be recording in 3 weeks which I’m very excited about and happy about. It’s my second EP so I’m looking forward to that.
Q. Thredbo is a beautiful area, is it somewhere you have visited previously?
Ms Murphy: This is my first time to Thredbo and I’m a little bit disappointed I won’t see the snow. I haven’t seen the snow before but I hear that it’s still very beautiful there so I’m looking forward to it.
Q. Thredbo Jazz Festival has a number of small intimate venues. Do you like the idea of being up close and personal with the fans at smaller venues / Festivals?
I love small venues because of the intimacy – I get to see people! It’s always difficult when you’ve got a big stage and you can’t see the people that are right in front of you. I like to have interaction with my… with the people and see me so I really love the intimate type of thing.
Thanks Ms Murphy.
