If you haven’t yet heard of Little May, it’s likely you will soon. Since their first single was uploaded to Soundcloud last year, their popularity has increased, and they have since released their debut EP, played at festivals, toured with Rodriguez, and signed international record deals.

It’s easy to identify with Little May – down to Earth girls from Sydney who have been swept up into the buzz of the international music world. Liz Drummond, rhythm guitar and vocalist of the band, explains:

Lately we’ve all been pinching ourselves. When we were overseas, it was an eye opener to what’s really happening. There’s been a lot of hype [around Little May], and I think we weren’t really living it until now. It’s pretty cool, I don’t think I’ve ever felt like this in my entire life!

But their recently signed international record contracts speak for themselves, and it’s clear that these girls are going places. This fact is also shown by their recent schedule – touring England and America including supports with Cold War Kids, and more recently joining Rodriguez on his Australian tour.

Playing with Rodriguez was just mind-blowing – we’re all speechless about it. To play with a legend is pretty special. And we got to spend a bit of time with him – at the last show he gave us 40 minutes of his time. He was so lovely and was asking all these questions about us and what we’re doing.

Touring with the Cold War Kids is another thing we’re all speechless about – They were just so good. I don’t think I’ve seen a band play like that for a long time. I could not fault them – they’ve obviously been playing for so long they’re just so in sync with each other.

Little May’s self-titled EP, although just recently released, features songs written as far back as 2012. It’s an introduction to their music and it’s indicative of where they started. But they’ve been developing their music beyond this – Liz assures an album is definitely in the works, and we can expect it to be even darker and rockier than the EP. There will also be a lot of collaborative songwriting on the new album.

We’re actually in the rehearsal studio now, just working on one of the songs. We’ve definitely got a couple of songs lined up for the album, and we’re just starting to think about track listing and who we’re going to record with.

Amidst all the recent excitement, Liz has no idea exactly what signing international record deals will mean for the band’s future.

We’re just taking it one step at a time at the moment. It’s overwhelming in a really good way, but I think the key to having a long career is just taking it day by day – we’re just focussing on writing and putting out an album and going with the flow.

Their debut headline tour is definitely going to be iconic, and Liz says that fans can expect to hear both new and old material. They are also playing an interesting mix of both new and familiar venues.

We’re playing at Rad Bar in Wollongong, which is where we played some of our first gigs ever when it was just the three of us and we were all fresh – playing venues like that is a bit sentimental for us. We’re also playing some venues we’ve never played before, which is something we wanted to do. We’re looking forward to playing at The Front – we’ve never played a gig in Canberra at a proper venue, just uni gigs, so this one sounds really good!

It certainly promises to be a special tour, and a chance for fans to catch the band before they become so famous that they’re packing out stadiums!

Little May play at The Front Cafe and Gallery, Lyneham on Saturday 22 November. Click here to buy tickets.
