Welcome back fro 2015. Here’s to another great year in Canberra.
There’s no such thing as a ‘sleepy January’ anymore. Here’s the best on for this weekend.
Enjoy!
1. James Turrell at National Gallery of Australia
From 11.00am every day.
You’ve heard this from us before, but JUST GO AND SEE IT. There’s pretty much nothing (apart from the leftovers from Jim Morrison’s pockets) that can prepare you for the sensory overload that is James Turrell’s masterful manipulation of light.
Step into another world and let yourself be completely overwhelmed. Then go and find somewhere quiet to sit down and talk it through. Enjoy.
2. Oscar movies at Palace Electric
All weekend – various sessions.
It kind of sneaks up on you each year, but here we are again in the middle of Oscar Season. All the big films expected to sweep the awards are showing now, so wether it’s the claustrophobic Birdman, the moving St Vincent or the gruff-though-colourful Mr Turner, there’s something for everyone.
Plus, you can smile smugly after the Academy Awards and smugly nod as you say, “Seen it.”
3. Matt Watkins at Academy Nightclub.
From 11.00pm
Academy announces the return of Melbourne young gun Matt Watkins.
Playing shows all around Melbourne is all in a nights work for Matty, holding residencies at Billboard, Hidden Forest, Cloud Nine & Wah Wah to name a few.
21 years young, this local Melbourne 6ft monster is synonymous with genuine talent, already providing the ears of this world with a vast array of musical treats. With an array of local and national shows in Matts calendar, plenty more production and a fresh liver the future is looking monstrous for young gun Matt Watkins.
4. Asian Cup Football at GIO Canberra Stadium
Saturday from 4.00pm
It’s a football tournament that covers half the world’s population. The fact that Australia is the host country and been recently demoted out of the Top 100 rankings makes the competition even more delicious. The pressure is certainly on for Ange Postecoglou and his squad, as Japan and China look to steal the silverware.
The second match takes place at Canberra Stadium with Korea Republic (the southern part) versus Oman. Get out there and soak up the atmosphere as Canberra’s Korean community gets behind the Taegeuk Warriors.
5. Paper Lions at Transit Bar
Saturday from 8.00pm.
Since forming, the lads from the small Canadian Province have written a fairy tale of success. They have received over twenty Canadian East Coast Music Award nominations (six in 2014 alone) and taken home Best Pop EP at the 2013 Independent Music Awards, whilst receiving consistent airplay across the board.
Whilst touring throughout Canada and aboard, Paper Lions have shared stages with the likes of CAKE, Tokyo Police Club, Hollerado, The Rheostatics, No Joy, Hot Hot Heat and Electric Six. Oh, and they’ve also performed for Duchess Camilla & Prince Charles. Cool!
If you love indie rock, come on down to Transit Bar for a wiggle.
Have fun, y’all…
