Wow – It’s crazy how much sport is on at the moment! With a long weekend ahead, and plenty of hot summer nights to follow – why not grab a few friends and settle in at any one of a number of pubs and clubs showing all the action on the big screens? The biggest question is what to pick!
Tennis
Every night until Sunday 1 February 2015
Hooray! Australians are finally playing well again… and then of course there’s Nick Kyrgios! It’s looking like another great Australian Open, with Federer at the top of his game and Serena hungrier than ever. Will Sam Stosur finally break the hometown hoodoo, or is the stage set for one of the new breed to step up.
Take part in the Australia Day Eve of watching players at Melbourne Park having to stop for the Australia Day Fireworks – pretty much the surest sign you’ll see that summer is here!
Debacle in Braddon will serve you up a pizza and can probably provide lovely beer from whatever country is playing on screen. Call 6247 1314 to book a table.
Cricket
Big Bash League – until 28 January
One-Day Tri-Series – until 1 February
World Cup – 14 February until 29 March
The Big Bash is coming to a close, but we’ve got our first Tri-Series in full swing for the first time in years. Over the Australia Day weekend we’ll see the Semi Finals for the BBL, while Australia take on India with a 50 over game on Australia Day itself. Given a ‘One-Dayer’ lasts as long as the Hottest 100, it’s likely your local will be playing both. In fact, The Duxton in O’Connor will be doing exactly that!
Football
Asian Cup 2015 – until 31 January
Stupid Socceroos. They were supposed to beat South Korea, finish top of their pool and host Uzbekistan in Melbourne. Instead, they’ve got a massive challenge in facing China in Brisbane on Thursday. If they can overcome that, it’s off to Newcastle on Saturday for a semi-final against (probably) Japan. Ouch.
Still there’s nothing better than cheering a goal in a pub with a bunch of like-minded fans. Grab your Socceroos scarf and cheer as hard as you can. The Ainslie Group – both at the Ainslie Football Club and Gungahlin Lakes Golf Club are ready to go. For Southsiders, the staff at Little Brooklyn in Kingston is getting right behind the team!
The Superbowl
Monday 2 February
Yep, it’s a Monday morning. Yes, you’re going to the pub at 9.00am…. however this is more than a sport – it’s a spectacle that is massive in its scale and impeccable in its execution. You probably have no idea who won in recent years, but know that Janet Jackson, Prince and Beyoncé have all torn it up during the half-time show. This year it’s Katy Perry and Lenny Kravitz.
Smoque is hosting its Superbowl party at the Civic store with heaps of BBQ food and $20.00 buckets of Budweiser. This has been a massive hit over the years, growing in popularity as much as the sport itself.
Meanwhile The Dock at Kingston Foreshore is doing it’s own thing, $5.00 Budweiser Beer and $10.00 Buffalo Chicken Wings – as well as a meet-and-greet with the Canberra Mustangs Ladies Gridiron League players.
Awesome! Game on!
