Now in its 27th year, Flickerfest, Australia’s leading Academy Qualifying and BAFTA recognised short film festival has made its way back to Canberra.
Palace Electric Cinemas will host the national tour, which will be showcasing a program of the Best of Australian Shorts on Thursday 5 April.
The long-standing festival is a platform for cinematic talents to launch their careers, using Flickerfest as a taste of the big screen. The filmmakers are often gratified for their ability to engage with their audiences immediately.
With more than 2,500 entries this year, the pool of talent is not to be missed. Highlights include: Australian animation After All which was awarded both Best Australian Animation and Screenplay at the Flickerfest awards ceremony in January; Miro, an Aboriginal Western staring Mark Coles Smith; and Martha The Monster, starring the voices of husband-wife duo, actress Rose Byrne and Bobby Cannavale.
Also front and centre will be AACTA award winning director, writer, producer and actor Alyssa McClelland with her film Second Best. This film will feel extremely familiar, utilising Dickson College and locations in Kaleen and Fyshwick as film sets, and local Canberrans as extras!
This year, Flickerfest has been in the limelight for their diversity of content and their vision of gender parity in the industry, focusing on a strong hold of women filmmakers.
