Stephen Hough is widely regarded as one of the most distinctive pianists of his generation. He is a progressive performer, composer, recording artist and writer.
Hough has made more than 15 concert appearances at the BBC Proms and many of his 50 albums have garnered international prizes, including several Grammy nominations and eight Gramophone Magazine Awards. The 2008 Gramophone ‘Gold Disc’ Award named his complete Saint-Saëns Piano Concertos as the best recording of the past 30 years.
For his Australian tour, Hough has devised a journey with his typical lateral inventiveness, from the familiarity of Beethoven’s ‘Moonlight Sonata’ to a work many regard as Liszt’s greatest composition, through the twisted paths of two Scriabin sonatas that Hough calls “hyperventilated, hyper-crazy, ecstatic works”. This surprising journey is enriched with a work written by Hough himself, entitled Sonata for piano (broken branches).
