Gertrude Boutique in Manuka is unique even amongst a suburb of quirky, original fashion outlets. Located on Bougainville Street in the popular dining and shopping area, Gertrude is a welcoming abode among shops better known for price tags than service.
Gertrude is warm and inviting. Walking into Gertrude is like walking into a cosy home. There are floor-to-ceiling mirrors, warm colours splashed on the walls and the shop smells like fresh leather. One of the most captivating features of the boutique is the painting of a woman. It is Gertrude herself – the shops muse, if you will. She is the creation of Melbourne-based artist Kim Kennedy, whose other works are available for purchase in store. The décor draws you in and you feel just as comfortable shopping, as you would sitting down to a coffee at one of the many surrounding cafes.
The store, originally named Furla for its range of products, has now extended the exquisite lines of shoes, handbags and accessories to luxury brands from across Italy. All the products are hand chosen by owner Maree Peatey, who travels to fashion shows and exhibitions in Italy annually.
Their products are selected from the finest ranges of the best luxury brands – some exclusive to Gertrude Boutique. The clientele includes mums, business owners, and aspiring professionals. Gertrude also welcomes regular visitors from the Southern Highlands and interstate who come for the gorgeous range of handcrafted leather handbags and shoes that are not available elsewhere.
Whilst shopping at Gertrude is not on a budgeters to-do list, Maree loves and swears by her products, and the quality and the timeless style they bring to an outfit. “The great thing about the Italian style is that it is pieces you can wear all-year round. They are timeless pieces, understated style.”
