J. M. W. Turner (1775–1851) is one of Britain’s greatest artists and a key figure of the Romantic period. Turner from the Tate includes 110 works, including 40 oil paintings and 70 works on paper and will convey how Turner established himself as a master of the European landscape tradition. It offers fresh perspectives on an artist who was valued as a master in his own time and whose impact was felt as far away as Australia.

In celebration of the exhibition and the artist’s British heritage, Executive Chef of Novotel Canberra’s One Restaurant , Steven Fraser, has put together a new English-themed winter menu featuring some of his favourite meals from his upbringing in England. Some of the standout dishes include the Gippsland (VIC) beef fillet with boulangere potatoes, carrots and garden peas, and the upside down apple and honey cake with warm custard. Steven has been in Australia for 11 years and, having cooked for President George Bush, Her Majesty the Queen and His Holiness the Dalai Lama before, has led One Restaurant to be one of the best hotel restaurants in the nation’s capital.

The Turner exhibition is just one of the many must see experiences in the capital this winter. For a food and wine experience with a difference, try a truffle hunt or degustation dinner at the Canberra & Capital Region Truffle Festival which is celebrating its fifth year with more than 40 venues involved. During August, the Fireside Festival offers a plethora of gourmet food and wine experiences mixed with musical entertainment, arts and outdoor fun like a trail ride on horseback. For some frosty outdoor fun, try ice-skating in the city at Garema Place during July – there’s even discos on Friday and Saturday nights.
