Since most of the world is caught up in what the media is calling ‘Royal Baby Mania’, eagerly anticipating the arrival of Kate and Will’s first child, I thought the fashion forward mothers-to-be out there would love a little something else to read in the form of a stylish guide to a maternity closet. Who doesn’t want to still dress like they are sitting front row at a fashion show?

One of my best friends is pregnant and beginning to struggle with dressing her growing bump, so I have been researching the subject and found that there actually is so much out there – so many stores, online boutiques and advice for creating ensembles to update your individual and unique look for a maternity wardrobe. These days there is simply no need to think you need to throw your style out the window! Upon hearing this, my friend let out a huge sigh of relief!

The first thing to do is only update what actually does not fit you anymore – undergarments and tops, tees, dresses etc. If your jeans still fit your legs, leave the top button or two undone to make room for bump and wear a belly band to hold them in place. This will also provide comfort and support (so I have read, and second, third, fourth time mothers will probably agree). Keep your cardigans, blazers and jackets well-fitted to show off your curves and still give your body shape sexy definition. Dressing frumpy will only make you feel frumpy (and we don’t want that). By embracing your body during this amazing time your natural glow will shine through!

Tights and ballet flats become a staple due to their comfort and versatility – so I would suggest opting for neutrals for everyday – but definitely being open to colourful and embellished styles for a bit of fun! Loading up on bangles and necklaces to give an all-black/all-neutral outfit a pop of colour is a great way to add style and, let’s face it, you won’t be able to wear them for much longer without them being pulled off by your little one!

I scoped out our local shopping malls and Canberra has a few fabulous stores definitely worth a visit:

Pumpkin Patch
Motherly Instincts
Target
Country Road

And a great online option: www.dressingfortwo.com.au
Nationally, here are some online options I loved:
