Canberra has an established music scene that has nurtured all manner of successful songwriters, bands, DJs and producers over the last few decades. From The Gadflys to The Whitlams to Alchemist to Aston Shuffle, Super Best Friends and hot new kids SAFIA, our city continuously sends talented citizens to the Big Smoke to take on bigger and better adventures.

After a massive debut outing in 2012, MusicACT is again bringing us MusicACT Annual Music Awards, otherwise known as the MAMAs.

Submissions are now open, for the MAMA’s. So, if you are a new, up-and-coming outfit, or one of those who has been doing the rounds for years, get involved, support this fantastic community initiative and sign up via the MAMAs website. Your last chance will be on September 23 (we’ll be back to remind you before that happens).

Like all good music awards, there are some awards voted on by the public, allowing non-professional enthusiasts and passionate music lovers to deliver a public verdict. At the MAMAs, there are five categories for you to cast your vote: Best Music Theatre Production, Artist of 2013, Youth Artist of 2013, Live Performer of 2013 and Live Venue of 2013. All pretty self-explanatory, but it will be fun to watch who walks way with the Live Venue Award given the four or five strong players in the Canberra market. Can anyone knock of last year’s winner The Phoenix and its army of eternally loyal fans?

Finalists will be announced on September 18 and the big event – at the wonderful Albert Hall – will be on Saturday 23 November.

Get passionate. Get nominating. Get involved. Good luck!
