There’s a real art to creating a short film. To define characters, build a narrative and leave the audience satisfied with five or ten minutes requires incredible focus and discipline. It’s little wonder then that the world of short film is where most great directors cut their teeth. Look across the early works of Academy Award winners and you’ll already see the early signs of their signature style.
This month, Flickerfest returns to Canberra to celebrate the fine art of short film from some of the very best in the world. Showing from 7.00pm on Thursday 19 March at Dendy Cinema, this year’s national festival tour features a selection from the record 2400 entries to the Academy®Award accredited and BAFTA-recognised Flickerfest festival.
One of the highlights will be the screening of Snowblind. Shot in Cooma by Canberra born-and-bred writer/director Sean Kruck, it won the ‘Canon Award For Best Direction in an Australian Short’ at Flickerfest 2015. Set in the late 1970s, 16-year-old Jack has dreams of emulating his idol, Ace Frehley, and winning the affection of his teenage neighbour, Paige. Over the course of a weekend Jack negotiates love, his family and the slippery slope of adolescence. It should be great fun with plenty of familiar landscapes.
Add to that The Bush Mechanics, Grey Bull and Florence Has Left the Building – all of which are uplifting, thought-provoking and entertaining stories – and you’ve got a great night of great ideas and exciting filmmaking. After the screening, join the Canberra film community for complimentary drinks and nibbles, and some of the Flickerfest team. Tickets are only $20.00 ($16.50 concession) and available directly from the Dendy Cinema Canberra or on-line.
