Game Day is here again. The GWS Giants are taking to Manuka Oval this Saturday against the Melbourne Demons. Both sides are coming off wins in Round One, and will be keen to continue this form.

We sat down with GWS Giants’ Adam Tomlinson to discuss footy, fans and fun in Canberra.

What do you miss about your Melbourne?

Mostly my family. I guess that’s the hardest thing for anyone leaving home. At the same time, though, there was about fifteen of us leaving home and moving up from Melbourne as well, so we could all keep and eye out and support each other.

I lived with Sam Frost and Toby Green for my first year, which mad it easier. It really feels like home now… I’ve just brought myself a house as well, so I plan on being here a while.

The Giants come down to Canberra for matches four times a year, as well as doing promo events. What strikes you most about Canberra?

Canberra crowds are really supportive of us when we play. They just seem desperate to get out there and see good footy. As players, we really appreciate that, and although we do a lot of community visits throughout the season, the fans are always excited to see us. It’s great.

That just makes us want to play better when we come down to Manuka.

It’s a great atmosphere at the ground. Fans used to just turn out in their traditional colours, but we’ve noticed the growth in orange over the last few years. Is it something the players feel?

Absolutely. Even the preseason game against Sydney was a great example. In previous years we would have expected everyone to be cheering for the Swans, but in 2015, there are fans turning out because they support GWS. It’s a great thing to be a part of!

What’s you favourite thing to do in Canberra when you have some down-time?

I like the nightlife in Canberra. I’ve got a few friends who go to work and attend uni there, so I come down for reasons other than just for footy. I’ve had quite a few good nights at Academy, as well as a few enjoyable drinks at Uni Pub and Mooseheads. They’re always fun!

Much like GWS, big things are expected of Melbourne this weekend? What weaknesses will GWS target?

To be honest, we’ll do a bit of research on Melbourne, but as a team we’d prefer to focus on our own strengths… moving the ball quickly and catching the opposition by surprise.

We had a good win against St Kilda in Round One, and Melbourne upset Gold Coast, so both sides will be looking to keep the momentum going!

Who’s your favourite footballer to play against?

I love playing against Nick Reiwoldt. Although I was a Collingwood supporter back then, I really watched him carefully when I was growing up. Playing last week was great. Even better to win!

How much are you going to beat Melbourne by?

Hahaha! I’m not going to put a number on it, but I reckon if we get the crowd behind us, there’s a really good chance we can grab the four points.
