Canberra-born Jack Steele is one of the GWS Giant’s rising stars. The Rookie has only a couple of games under his belt, but with both his confidence and skills growing it’s likely jack will be a permanent feature of the Giants sides in the coming months and years. We had a quick talk to Jack ahead of this week’s big match against Geelong at Startrack Manuka Oval.

Thanks for taking time with OutInCanberra.
You played your junior footy in Canberra. What did you love about Belconnen Magpies?
The Magpies was a really strong community club. Even though a lot of friends and families gathered around to support the club, we did a lot to support other organisations. The Lifeline Bookfair was a big one, and lots of the players would head over to volunteer their help to raise money.
What do you miss about Canberra?
I miss my mates and my family – I just don’t get to see them as much as I used to. We train a lot, and when we come to Canberra for matches we’re very busy with media and preparing for the game.
What were your favourite bars, restaurants and cafes?
Do you know what I really miss? Zambreros! I just love Mexican food, and I couldn’t get enough of it. Unfortunately there isn’t an outlet anywhere near where I live and train. Hopefully soon they’ll open one soon!
In the preseason we talked to Adam Tomlinson. There was a sense of optimism, but certainly not an expectation of the amazing start to the season that you had.
We’re still really confident. The injury toll from the Collingwood game put us back a few matches, but as the players return to the side we’re looking stronger and stronger. We’re really excited for a strong finish to the season and a place in the finals
This is your first season at GWS. Which of the senior players are you looking towards for advice?
Steve Coniglio is great to talk to, and I get along really well with Callan Ward. Adam Ward is my mentor, and I’ve learned a lot from him. They’ve been great to train with, but it’s also great to know that I can ask them anything and they’re happy to give advice.
Who in the AFL are you most looking forward to playing against?
Definitely Nate Fyffe. There’s almost no doubt that he’s going to win The Brownlow this year, and he is playing unbelievable football. We have to play Fremantle at Subiaco, so it’s going to be a real test against the best in the league on his home turf.
How much are you going to beat Geelong by?
Ha! I’m not going to answer that! You’ll have to come down and see!
