Spring Racing season is in full swing. With the Melbourne Cup less than two weeks, it’s time to put plans into action for a big say at the races.
Tab.com.au is the place to go if you’re looking to have a flutter on the big race, however, as always, you have to bet wisely. There’s no point in spending next week’s play money on what you’ve been told is a ‘sure thing’. Instead, you should never bet more than you can lose.
With this in mind, for those not so experienced in all the fun of the track (or those who simply refuse to learn their lessons) we’ve collated the office wisdom to develop a quick list of Dos-and Don’ts to get you through an epic ‘First Tuesday of November’.
Take our tips to have you looking great, having fun, and waking up the next day wanting to do it all again next race day.
Dress
Do abide by the simple mantra: IT’S EITHER ONE THING OR THE OTHER.
For the ladies, never show too much skin. Classy, covered up and comfortable should be your mantra for race day. And as a rule, your dress or skirts hemline should certainly sit below the knee.
For the fellas, it’s either a hat or sunglasses. There’s no clearer way to demonstrate your lack of understanding of the finer points of formal dressing than by wearing both. Ugh.
Don’t forget the weather.
While we all want to look our best, lobster-red is not on trend. Heels that sink into the turf are neither elegant or functional, and woollen suits are going to dehydrate you quicker than you can say, “Another SuperDry, thanks!“
Drinking
Do keep it reasonable.
A day at the track is a day of sophistication and delight in the sun with a whole bunch of people who have also put a lot of work into their appearance. Keep yourself nice by pacing your drink. The Melbourne Cup is always won by stayers, never sprinters.
Don’t crack the first bottle at 10.00am.
It’s going to be a long day, so the last thing you want is to be completely wrecked before the feature race. All that will happen is you’ll be that person everyone else points at around 4.00pm, and your friends will have plenty of photos and video to taunt you for the rest of the week/month/year.
Eating
Do Eat.
It’s really, really important. If you don’t, you could faint, or spew, or both at the same time… and nobody wants those to happen at the same time. Ever.
Don’t impose yourself on the broader public.
No-one wants to be that person at Macca’s at 5.00pm yelling at the kid behind the counter because you can’t remember what sauce you want on your nuggets. The staff are not getting paid enough to put up with you.
There you go. Safety first, peeps! Take our tips and we promise you’ll have a fantastic day.
Here’s to another great Melbourne Cup Carnival. As always, bet wisely.
