Sundays are a good day to be lazy, recharge and prepare yourself for another gruelling work week. There are a few essentials needed to be lazy in style: a couple of friends, some chilled-out music and a couple of drinks.
One place for Sunday boozing that fits this bill is King O’Malley’s in the city. Theirs is the kind of décor – with dark wood and barrels – that has a magically calming affect on its punters. It goes without saying that drinks and food are available and, on Sundays, a group of folky individuals play their fiddles and flutes, jamming to their hearts pleasure and their listeners’ enjoyment. Head over to King O’Malley’s for this week’s Sunday sesh.
When I have my choice of food and drinks I tend towards a Mexican vibe. It’s hard to say, “No,” to tacos and sangria – especially since both fit in so well with a relaxed afternoon of drinking. Perhaps even a sneaky margarita for those with a little spirit still keen to make a day and a night of it? Just across the way beers in buckets at Beach Burrito where there is Mexican food and space for the Sunday afternoon chill. What could get more relaxed than than a bucket of beer or cider amongst friends?
If you’re on the southside and don’t feel like travelling far on your day of rest, Little Brooklyn serves hearty American-style meals from steak to jumbalaya, along with beer, cider and drinks of your choice all with an acoustic music set. Kingston has plenty of places to go if you’ve got a few dollars to burn, but Little Brooklyn is one of those few very reasonably priced venues. Perfect for a casual Sunday!
All of these places have beer gardens (or the equivalent outside space) to sink some beverages and Rose Cottage has a rather large one. Steeped in home cooked charm the grounds are spacious and yet secluded from the outside hustle and bustle. If you haven’t had a home-cooked meal for a while you can find a good substitute here, there is also live music, a bar, café and restaurant.
Northside, The Lighthouse is great place for a Sunday afternoon hangout. While Wednesdays are ‘The Lighty’s’ biggest night of the week, on Sundays the atmosphere is much more relaxed and the clientele more chilled.
And, last but certainly not least, the winner of the 2015 People’s Choice Awards Signature Series for ‘Best Place for a Sunday Session’ – Walt & Burley located on the Kingston Foreshore. They also have free Trivia every Sunday evening!
With the weather getting warmer there are plenty of opportunities to get out on the weekends and relax. This is just a taste of what’s on offer, so grab some friends and head out this Sunday.
