The Australia Day weekend: does it get any better than this?

It doesn’t. Save your boozing by the barbecue for Monday, there’s still two more days to get out and about across Canberra. Here are our picks.

Enjoy!

1. Asian Cup at Canberra Stadium
Friday from 5.30pm.

Ask your parents about how much Iran and Iraq fought in the early 80s, and then grab yourself some tickets to the last match of the tournament at Canberra Stadium.

Iran is the dark horse of the comp. Sanctions meant they played almost no lead-up games, but they’ve definitely got the skills. With tickets from $15.00, quality international football will never again be this cheap in Canberra.

2. Foam Party at Academy
Tickets from $15.00 (before 11.00pm).

It’s the perfect weekend to get your swimmers out, so why not start tonight down at A-Kadz? Kick off the long weekend with Melbourne DJ Some Blonde bringing the party into the heart of Civic.

Make sure you pack a snap-lock bag to protect your phone and wallet, because once the foam cannon fires up, the night is destined to get wet and wild!

3. Meat on a Spit at Hopscotch, Braddon
From Sunday.

Meat. MORE MEAT! That’s what you’ll get at Hopscotch this week, as we celebrate common sense overcoming red tape and their outdoor spit finally approved for use.

The team is celebrating this Sunday by lighting a fire under whatever slab of animal comes to mind. Pop in for a beer and see how long you can resist the tasty smells. Yum.

4. Australia Celebrates Live at Federation Mall, Parliament House
Sunday from 4.00pm (gates open at 3.00pm)

It’s the concert that kicks off a day of national celebration. This year, local band Driving North kick off precedings before the Australian of the Year announcements (best of luck to the ACT nominees!). After that, Aussie icon Paul Kelly takes to the stage before Jessica Mauboy dances up a storm.

Entry is free. Bring an esky, but leave any glass at home.

5. AUSTRALIA DAY everywhere!
All weekend!

Don’t just sit at home on the couch… there is so much happening today! There’s a sausage sizzle in the morning at Commonwealth Park, and the National Museum is putting on a party in the afternoon. Plus, there are plenty of bars showing the cricket, playing the Hottest 100, cooking snags and serving ice-cold beer and wine. What’s not to love? Go to our guide where you can see all this and more!
