If you’re looking for a weekend coastal getaway to escape these frosty Canberra days, Kiama is the perfect destination for you.

Kiama (NSW) is a sleepy little coastal town, approximately 2.5 hours away from Canberra. The location is perfect to jump in the car on a Saturday morning for an overnight trip or if you have a little more time, a two-night stay will serve you well because there are plenty of things to see and do…

EAT & DRINK

Milk & Honey
is a great spot to kick off your day in Kiama. This café is located at the top of Blowhole Point Road, so take a seat outside, grab a fresh cup of coffee and soak up the million dollar views. We opted to try a selection of savoury and sweet brekky plates to satisfy all of our cravings – the mushrooms on sourdough with ricotta and poached eggs, the healthy start bowl with house-made salmon gravlax, greens, nuts and beetroot poached eggs and we couldn’t resist the house-made waffles with maple bacon, fried banana, strawberries and ice cream. Our selection ticked all the boxes and set us up for the day ahead.

When your brekky has worn off and you’re in need of something a little extra to tie you over, you can’t go past a big and delicious paper bag of fish and chips. We stopped past Fish n Chips Kiama Wharf for lunch, undoubtedly one of the best fish ‘n’ chip shops in town! It doesn’t get much better than fresh fish and salty chips while you’re taking in the sun on the coast.

If you feel like a little drive by the time dinner rolls around, The Blue Swimmer is a great restaurant just down the road in Gerroa. After spying the rave reviews we couldn’t resist taking the drive to check it out. Its menu is filled with a variety of seafood dishes, as well as a few other options if seafood doesn’t float your boat. Pair your meal with a cheeky glass of wine from the extensive wine list and you’ll be in for a great dining experience.

EXPLORE
Kiama is filled with activities to keep you entertained all weekend long. It is home to the famous Blowhole that attracts up to 600,000 visitors a year. If your timing is right you will catch it shooting 25m of water up into the air giving you bit of a shower! So make sure you stick around long enough to see it in action.

If you fancy getting out and being active, the Kiama Coast Walk if definitely one that you should embark on. The walk stretches 22km along the coastline from Minnamurra to Gerringong and is broken up into three sections, making it easy to do as little or as much as you like. I would recommend doing the second section of the walk from Blowhole Point to Kiama Heights. It will take you approximately 90 minutes to complete and will give you a great view over the headlands past Storm Bay, Surf Beach, Kendalls Beach, Easts Beach and Loves Bay.

SHOP

The main street is lined with boutiques filled with unique furniture, homewares, art, jewellery and fashion that will certainly give your wallet a workout. One of my top picks was Deer Willow. This shop will make you want to re-decorate your entire home and wardrobe with its beautiful interiors and elegant clothing. Don’t say I didn’t warn you!

If you’re up for more shopping after your main street spree, be sure to check out the Kiama Seaside Markets, held on the third Sunday of each month at Black Beach from 9am – 2pm. It has a wide variety of local produce and home-crafted goodies, so you will definitely be able to nab yourself a souvenir.

STAY

Airbnb
should be the first place you look when it comes to choosing a place to call home for your weekend getaway. With its wide selection of beautiful homes, you’ll be spoilt for choice when selecting the best one for you. Whether it’s a family holiday, a girls’ weekend or a romantic trip away, you will be sure to find a house that will suit all of your needs.

If you’re after something a little more low-key, check out the Kiama Harbour Cabins. The cabins are located at the top of Blowhole Point giving you spectacular views of the ocean and surrounding countryside. So sit back, relax and soak up the scenery.
