What better way to soak up a sunny spring afternoon than to grab a pal, hop in the car and take a short trip up the highway to head out for lunch. Last weekend I did exactly this.
After scrolling through its Instagram feed, full of charm and character, our mission was to check out the highly talked about venue that is Some Cafe, and I can assure you it did not disappoint.
This hidden gem is located in Collector, NSW which is about 45 minutes from Canberra up the Federal Highway, making it a perfectly positioned pit stop for Canberra-Sydney travellers or fab day trip destination for amazing coffee, home-style cooking and irresistible baked goods.
Oliver and his partner Lucy started Some Café almost a year ago but in January this year, the pair established a permanent home for the café on Bourke Street in Collector – since then they have made quite the name for themselves.
The quaint cafe accounts for every detail with the building still giving a nod to its history as the old Collector General Store, founded in 1829. The fit-out boasts bright white interiors and original timber to keep the heritage feel of the building alive.
The space really nails the mix between modern cafe and country farmhouse and has a relaxed and cosy atmosphere beaming with natural light and a buzzing vibe. While the tables are filled with fresh flowers, cute little trinkets and old classic books, the surrounding walls are lined with beautiful artworks by Collector local, Luke Chiswell.
After our mini road trip, a coffee fix was well overdue, and I was pretty keen to get my hands on a flat white to see if it lived up to the nation’s capital standard that we are used to. The silky smooth coffee arrived with a full-bodied aroma and I can safely say that it passed the ultimate test and lived up to all expectations.
Some Café’s simple menu comprises of the very best home-grown, locally-sourced produce, and follows a paddock-to-plate philosophy, so its meals are regularly changing with the seasons.
We opted to try a couple of dishes from the specials board – the homemade frittata filled with sweet potato, asparagus, juicy tomato and feta was cooked to perfection and accompanied with a fresh garden salad; and the cauliflower salad with lentils and baba ghanoush featured pomegranate beads that popped a little sweetness into each bite. Both meals deliciously fresh and full of flavour.
The cake cabinet was filled with amazing looking baked goodies, which regrettably we did not try, but I’m already itching to go back and get my hands on a piece of their carrot cake.
