A popular inner-south haunt that has stood the test of time, Public in Manuka offers you the best of both worlds, by providing a casual bar feel, while also capturing the bustling restaurant and kitchen in a unique setting that speaks to all walks of life.
First impression, the area is contemporary, spacious and filled with an abundance of natural light thanks to its stunning skylights, which also draw attention to the cascading greenery hovering above and encapsulating the grand bar – a welcome central point to the venue.
Public takes modernised pub to a new level. Fitted with industrial-esque fittings, a feature wall which pays homage to its history and predecessor, charming copper pendants, ambient led lighting, and plush seating around the corner which provides a more intimate space to converse over fine wine, Public is the perfect place if you’re seeking a new go-to.
As winter comes to an end, the venue’s folding doors provide seamless indoor and outdoor flow, and boasts one of the best outdoor dining areas in town – prime positioned to capitalise on the sun’s warmth and a great spot to people watch and lose track of time.
Manager, Scott Barrie, says it’s a great place to pop in for lunch or dinner in a fun environment that’s above your average traditional-style pub.
“The main thing that we pride ourselves on here is service. That’s what we’re all about and it was reflected when Public won Best Bar Presentation and Service at the recent AHA ACT Hospitality Awards,” he says.
“What I also really love about Public is when the place is really buzzing on Friday and Saturday nights – there’s a lot of energy and good vibes.”
Serving creative and hearty pub-style food with a twist, as well as light and healthy options, the menu has it all and is brought to life by head chef Daniel Perrot, who ensures that Public’s signature spirit echoes throughout the dining experience.
To kick off your Public feast, we recommend ordering the Trio of Goats Cheese Tarts, served with a generous mound of rocket, caponata and Spanish onion atop and drizzled with a balsamic glaze. The pastry is delightfully crisp and fluffy so make sure you get a part of every element in each bite to savour the full effect of this tasty starter. This one’s also perfect for the vegetarians out there.
No pub is complete without its signature burger and Public’s version does not disappoint! The aptly named Public Burger is a classic staple on the menu and a popular crowd pleaser. The filling dish to devour alongside a cold brew while watching the footy on the big screen with mates, this burger features a thick, succulent beef patty, melted cheese, lettuce, tomato and a secret ‘special sauce’, all wedged between a toasted bun and, of course, served with a side of golden shoestring fries.
If you’re after a substantial feed that’s surprisingly light on the stomach, opt for the Buffalo Mozzarella Pizza with basil, sea salt and olive oil – a dish which features the freshest ingredients that speak for themselves.
Taking pride and place on the menu is Public’s much-loved ‘From the grill’ section dedicated to quality steaks that would satisfy even the fussiest of meat lovers. Choose from 250g Eye Fillet, 350g Porterhouse or 450g Rib Eye, then add on two sides (garden salad, coleslaw, steamed greens, warm potato salad or hand cut chips) and sauce (gravy, pepper, mushroom or Dianne). Order off the grill if you’re in search for a timeless meal that you know and love, and can tailor to your taste to be a sure guaranteed good feed.
To top off our dining experience we turned our sights to dessert and couldn’t go past the stunning Chocolate Brulee. Simple, classic and down-right delicious, the brulee is a showcase of indulgent sweet flavours that aren’t too rich and balanced perfectly with a crispy biscotti and dollop of vanilla bean ice cream.
Public also offers weekly specials and events including Monday two for one pizza; Wednesday $20 schnitzel and drink; Thursday $10 wings; Friday $10 cocktails from 6pm; and live music most weekends.
So, for your next social gathering, date night or work lunch, rediscover an iconic suburban favourite and make Public your destination.
