Piazzolla Tango

Acclaimed Argentinean pianist Marcela Fiorillo is bringing to life the music of Astor Piazzolla in Piazzolla Tango on Saturday 23rd June 2012.

Piazzolla’s music is for lovers of classical and jazz music worldwide. A hero and cult figure in Argentina, Piazolla Tango also features dance from Jairo Sanchez Rivera and Amy Teuchert and poetry from Geoff Page .

The Ambassador of the Argentine Republic, his Excellency Pedro Villagra Delgado, will officially open the event at The Street Theatre. The show starts at 8pm and costs $35 for adults and $30 for concessions.

I have a confession to make. I have lived in Canberra my entire life and have never been to a concert at the Canberra Theatre. As shameful as this is, I think I have successfully redeemed myself. I was lucky enough to attend a sold-out performance of Australian country rock and roll at the Canberra Theatre Playhouse last Thursday. Two iconic, Australian ladies of country rock brought the theatre alive, dazzling the audience with their soulful vocals, cheeky lyrics and cheerful onstage presence. I am speaking of course of two Aussie gems; Butterfly Boucher and Missy Higgins.

When choosing an establishment to dine at, it’s hard to avoid generating preconceived profiles based on the (occasionally eyebrow raising) title of the business. Cream cafe and bar sounds smoothly suave and one expects the decor to reflect the off-white adjective. Tongue & Groove drips with young, quirky and contemporary, I have geographic expectations of Waters Edge, Alto sits approvingly on a mountain and Kingsleys Steakhouse seemed pretty self-explanatory.
